What is it?

There is no vaccine against malaria for travellers — prevention means bite avoidance plus the right antimalarial tablets for your destination. Malaria is spread by evening- and night-biting mosquitoes across much of Africa, Asia and Latin America, and can be fatal without prompt treatment. Returning travellers who skipped tablets make up most of the severe cases seen in UK hospitals.

Who is it recommended for?

Anyone travelling to a malaria risk area — including previous residents of risk countries, whose immunity fades within a couple of years of moving to the UK. We match the tablet to your destination, medical history and preference: atovaquone/proguanil (daily, well tolerated), doxycycline (daily, budget-friendly), or mefloquine (weekly).

Course and timing

Started before you enter the risk area (1–2 days for most daily tablets; 2–3 weeks for mefloquine) and continued after you leave (7 or 28 days depending on the tablet). Dispensed at your appointment — no GP prescription needed.

When should you book?

Travelling in a few weeks or a few months? Either way, we can help. Coming in four to six weeks ahead gives the most flexibility for any multi-dose courses.

Flying sooner — even this week? Please still book. We offer rapid and accelerated courses, and most travellers can be vaccinated on the same day as their appointment. Many single-dose vaccines provide protection quickly.

Had some vaccines before? Bring your records and we will check what is still in date. Often a single booster is all that is needed, and that can be given at the same visit.

What happens at your appointment

A straightforward visit, usually 15–20 minutes, with no obligation to have anything you do not need.

1

Tell us about your trip

Where you are going, what you will be doing and how long for. Bring any vaccination records you have.

2

Your risk assessment

Our pharmacist checks your itinerary and health history against current UK travel health guidance, and explains what is worth having.

3

Vaccinated the same day

Most vaccines are given there and then. If a rapid or accelerated course suits you better, we will plan it around your travel date.

Not sure if you need this one?

Our pharmacist will confirm at your risk assessment — there is no obligation to have anything you do not need.
