Rifaximin has a broad antimicrobial spectrum against most of the Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria responsible for gastrointestinal infections. Because it is very poorly absorbed from the gut, it acts locally in the intestine and is not effective against invasive pathogens — which is why it is only appropriate for non-invasive traveller's diarrhoea. In clinical studies, resistant bacteria rarely emerged during a standard three-day course, and any resistant strains were unstable and disappeared rapidly once treatment stopped. Your pharmacist will confirm suitability before supply.
