Do you need vaccinations for Vietnam?

Short answer: Hepatitis a, typhoid, polio, diphtheria & tetanus are the vaccinations most commonly recommended for travellers to Vietnam. Your exact needs depend on where you are going and what you will be doing, which we confirm at a short consultation.

This destination has some malaria risk, so antimalarial tablets may also be recommended for part or all of your trip.

Ha Long Bay, Hoi An lanterns, the Mekong Delta and some of the best street food in Asia - Vietnam rewards travellers who arrive prepared. Food- and water-borne illness is the main risk for short trips, while rural and longer itineraries bring rabies and Japanese Encephalitis into the picture.

When should you book?

Travelling in a few weeks or a few months? Either way, we can help. Coming in four to six weeks ahead gives the most flexibility for any multi-dose courses.

Flying sooner — even this week? Please still book. We offer rapid and accelerated courses, and most travellers can be vaccinated on the same day as their appointment. Many single-dose vaccines provide protection quickly.

Had some vaccines before? Bring your records and we will check what is still in date. Often a single booster is all that is needed, and that can be given at the same visit.

Malaria protection

Cities and main coastal resorts are generally low risk, but some rural and highland areas carry malaria risk. Bring your route and we'll advise whether tablets are needed.

Staying well on your trip

Take a small kit

Rehydration sachets, painkillers, plasters and any regular medication in its original packaging. Ask us about stand-by treatment for upset stomachs before you go.

Sun and heat

High-factor sun cream, plenty of water and shade in the middle of the day prevent most common holiday health problems.

Food and water

Be a little cautious with unpeeled fruit, salads and ice outside reputable venues, particularly in the first days of your trip.

Travel insurance

Make sure your policy covers any activities you have planned, and carry details of it with you rather than leaving them at home.

What happens at your appointment

A straightforward visit, usually 15–20 minutes, with no obligation to have anything you do not need.

1

Tell us about your trip

Where you are going, what you will be doing and how long for. Bring any vaccination records you have.

2

Your risk assessment

Our pharmacist checks your itinerary and health history against current UK travel health guidance, and explains what is worth having.

3

Vaccinated the same day

Most vaccines are given there and then. If a rapid or accelerated course suits you better, we will plan it around your travel date.
