Infected Insect Bite Treatment – NHS Pharmacy First at Kiveton Pharmacy

Insect bite

Insect bites or stings are typically minor and tend to improve within a few days. However, there is a possibility of infection or a serious allergic reaction in some cases. If you suspect your insect bite is infected, consult with a Kiveton Pharmacy Pharmacist promptly.

Recognising Infected Insect Bite Symptoms:

  • Increased redness
  • Swelling
  • Heat
  • Pain
  • Pus or discharge
  • Itching
  • Increased tenderness
  • Fever or malaise

Consult Your Kiveton Pharmacy Pharmacist: Under the new NHS Pharmacy First service, Kiveton Pharmacy pharmacists now offer an extended range of treatment options for infected insect bites. Your Kiveton Pharmacy pharmacist can provide expert advice and treatment without the need for an appointment or a visit to your GP.

Managing Insect Bite Symptoms: Do:

  • Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth or a clean cloth soaked in cold water on the swollen area for at least 20 minutes.
  • Keep the affected area elevated, if possible.
  • Take painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen if the sting is painful.
  • Use antihistamines to relieve itching (avoid antihistamine cream if exposed to caterpillar hairs).
  • Utilise hydrocortisone cream to reduce itching and swelling.

Don’t:

  • Avoid scratching the bite or sting, as it could lead to infection.
  • Refrain from using home remedies such as bicarbonate of soda to treat the bite or sting.

If you are experiencing symptoms of an infected insect bite, trust your Kiveton Pharmacy for comprehensive care and prompt treatment.
