Sinusitis is a common condition characterized by inflammation of the sinuses, which are air-filled cavities located in the facial bones around the nose. This inflammation can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, allergies, or structural issues in the nasal passages. Blocked or fluid-filled sinuses create an environment that promotes the growth of microorganisms, resulting in sinusitis symptoms.
Symptoms of sinusitis include facial pain or pressure, nasal congestion, a runny or stuffy nose, and headaches. Reduced sense of smell and taste, coughing, and fatigue may also be experienced. Acute sinusitis typically lasts for a short period, often following a cold or respiratory infection, while chronic sinusitis persists for over 12 weeks despite treatment attempts.
The treatment for sinusitis depends on the underlying cause. Viral infections usually resolve on their own with rest and supportive care, but bacterial infections may require antibiotics. Over-the-counter decongestants, saline nasal sprays, and pain relievers can help alleviate symptoms. In cases of chronic sinusitis or severe symptoms, medical intervention such as prescription medications or surgery may be recommended to address the underlying issues. If you suspect you have sinusitis or experience persistent symptoms, we encourage you to consult with our pharmacy team for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
