What is MenB?
Meningococcal group B (MenB) is a type of bacteria that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These are serious, life-threatening illnesses that can develop very quickly. They're most common in babies and young children, with a second peak in teenagers and young adults, particularly those starting university or living in shared accommodation.
How the vaccine works
The vaccine helps your immune system recognise and fight the MenB bacteria before they can make you seriously ill. It teaches your body to produce antibodies, so if you ever come into contact with the bacteria, your immune system can respond quickly.
Two doses are essential. Full protection requires a complete two-dose course. A single dose does not provide reliable protection.
The protection it gives
A completed course significantly reduces your risk of MenB meningitis and septicaemia. Because these illnesses can come on within hours and may be fatal or cause lasting harm such as hearing loss, scarring or limb loss, being protected in advance is the safest approach — especially before moving into university halls or other shared living.
Who is eligible (free on the NHS)?
All current Year 13 students
Or anyone of equivalent age.
Anyone under 25 starting university
Or moving into further education halls of residence for the first time this autumn.
